SUMMONING

FEASTING ON BLOOD

The Plague

2000

Judging by past releases, Summoning is truly a unique and inspiring group. Most of their albums are both boundless in their majesty and endless in their depth. Summoning's music expresses desperation and sorrow at times, but overall the listener cannot deny the ever present atmosphere and relaxing grandeur of the composition. Apparently, the group's lyrical inspiration is derived from Tolkien and this theme stays consistent with all of their releases to date. Most songs on Stronghold still have that amazing flow that past releases do such as the song entitled Lost Where No Pathman Goes, but some of the songs fall short as if the album was rushed in some sense. As I stated, this album is excellent, sans a couple of songs where the vocal distortion tends to get a little annoying, effectively breaking out of the entrancing mode of the song. Stronghold is good, but if you want to experience Summoning at their best be sure to get a hold of their 1996 release entitled Dol Guldur.
